The Raspberry Pi is a popular choice for budget projects, education and pilots. It is not a run-anything player — it is a small, cheap way to get simple content on a screen, managed from the same Fugo cloud that powers your bigger deployments.

Ultra-affordable

A Raspberry Pi is one of the cheapest ways to power a screen — often a fraction of the cost of a dedicated media player. That makes it ideal when hardware budget is tight, or when you need to prove a concept before committing to a wider rollout.

Compact and low-power

A credit-card-sized board tucks neatly behind a display and sips only a few watts. It is easy to mount, easy to hide, and simple to swap out or re-image if a unit ever needs replacing — no bulky player box on show.

Great for pilots and education

The Pi is a favourite in classrooms, maker spaces, libraries and proof-of-concept rollouts where cost matters more than heavy video performance. Stand up a bulletin board or a menu screen for the price of a coffee round.

Huge community

Millions of Raspberry Pi users mean an enormous ecosystem of cases, mounts, power supplies and documentation. Whatever your enclosure or wiring question, someone has almost certainly solved it and written it up.

Which Pi to use

Recommended Raspberry Pi models

Performance tracks the Pi’s hardware and its bundled Chromium version, so newer boards run Fugo best. Pick a recommended model and keep content simple — think images, text and lightweight layouts rather than smooth 4K video or multi-zone playback.

Recommended for new builds

The Raspberry Pi 5 is the best performer for Fugo signage, with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B a close and widely available second. Both handle images, text and simple layouts comfortably, and their newer Chromium builds support the widest set of App Store apps and webpages.

Supported, not recommended

The Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, B+ and B still run Fugo, but expect slower page rendering and reduced app support. They are fine for basic single-zone content on an existing board you already own — we would not buy one new for signage. The Pi 1, Zero and Zero W are not supported.

Honest performance note

We would rather set expectations up front. On any Pi, video playback is not especially smooth, multi-zone layout performance is poor, and multi-zone and website scripting are not supported (unlike Windows, macOS and Android). Some App Store apps will not render smoothly. Keep Pi screens to single-zone, lightweight content.

Flash the pre-configured image

Download the pre-configured Fugo Raspberry Pi image and write it to an SD card with Raspberry Pi Imager. The image bundles the OS and the Fugo player together, so there is no separate operating-system install, no packages to add and nothing to configure by hand.

Boot into the player

Insert the SD card, connect the Pi to your screen over HDMI and power it on. It boots directly into the Fugo player — no desktop, no launcher, no extra software to start — and displays a pairing PIN ready to connect.

Pair your screen and publish

Enter the PIN in Fugo CMS to connect the screen to your account. From there you publish, schedule and monitor content remotely — group your Pi screens alongside every other player, and push updates over the air without touching the hardware again.

What runs well on Pi

What a Raspberry Pi runs well — and what it doesn’t

Capability on the Pi tracks its bundled Chromium version: if Chromium can render it, Fugo can play it. In practice that means static and lightweight content is the sweet spot, and heavy motion or complex layouts belong on a more powerful player. Here is the honest breakdown.

Runs well

Images and simple slides in JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and GIF, plus PDFs — in both landscape and portrait. This is where the Pi shines: bulletins, notices, wayfinding, welcome screens and price lists all look crisp and stay reliable.

Works, with caveats

Video (MP4, MPG, MPEG, MOV, AVI), webpages and many App Store apps play, but performance is limited — video is not especially smooth and some apps will not render cleanly. Keep clips short and light, and test on your exact model before you rely on them.

Not on the pi

Multi-zone layouts and website scripting are not supported on Raspberry Pi, and multi-zone performance is poor. If your design splits the screen into live regions or needs smooth 4K, choose a more capable player rather than forcing it onto a Pi.

The Pi runs the standard Fugo media set within the limits above. These are the formats and capabilities you can count on, so you can plan content that plays reliably.

Images and documents

JPEG, JPEG 2000, PNG, WebP, SVG and GIF images, plus PDF documents — the crispest, most dependable content on a Pi, in landscape or portrait orientation.

Video and audio

MP4, MPG, MPEG, MOV and AVI video containers, plus MP3 audio. Playback works but is not especially smooth, so keep clips light and short for the best results.

Apps and webpages

App Store apps and live webpages render through the Pi’s Chromium. Capability tracks that Chromium version, so newer boards handle more; website scripting is the notable exception.

Orientation

Full landscape and portrait support, so a Pi behind a rotated display drives a tall menu board or a wayfinding pillar just as easily as a widescreen sign.

Offline playback

Media is cached on the device and keeps playing through short network drops, so a Wi-Fi blip does not leave a blank screen in front of your audience.

Remote management

Remote screenshot monitoring and remote Fugo application updates are supported, so you can confirm what is playing and roll out updates without visiting the Pi.

Which Raspberry Pi model should I use?

We recommend the Raspberry Pi 5 or Raspberry Pi 4 Model B for the best results. The Pi 3 Model A+, B+ and B are supported but not recommended — expect slower rendering. The Pi 1, Zero and Zero W are not supported. See the Raspberry Pi hardware directory for the full list.

How do I install Fugo on a Raspberry Pi?

You do not install an OS and then add Fugo — you flash a single pre-configured image. Download the Fugo Raspberry Pi image, write it to an SD card with Raspberry Pi Imager, insert the card and power on the Pi. It boots straight into the Fugo player and shows a pairing PIN. Can a Raspberry Pi play smooth 4K or heavy video?

No — and we would rather be upfront about it. Video playback on a Pi is not especially smooth, and some App Store apps will not render smoothly. The Pi is best for images, text and simple layouts. If you need reliable 4K video or heavy multi-zone playback, choose a more powerful player.

Does the pi support multi-zone layouts and website scripting?

No. Multi-zone layouts and website scripting are not supported on Raspberry Pi (unlike Windows, macOS and Android). Multi-zone layout performance on the Pi is poor, so we do not list it as a supported feature. Pi deployments should stick to single-zone content.

What if I need more performance than a pi can give?

If you outgrow the Pi — more video, multi-zone layouts or website scripting — you can keep the same Fugo account and move those screens to a more capable player. A standard mini-PC or industrial box running Linux is a natural next step; see Fugo on Linux.
