What is the Video Stream app?
The Video Stream app allows you to broadcast live or on-demand video content to your digital signage screens using a direct HLS stream link. This makes it ideal for streaming anything from in-house corporate announcements to product content loops or live sports.
You can also enable synchronized playback across multiple screens by configuring a proxy server and toggling the sync option. This feature is especially useful in settings like sports bars or large public venues where timing consistency across screens is important.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up the app and get your stream running on screen.
How to configure the Video Stream app in Fugo
There are two ways to add content with Fugo: using the Playlist Builder or the Design Studio. We'll walk through both below.
Using the playlist builder
1. Log into your Fugo Account. If you don’t have an account yet, you can start your 14-day free trial here.
2. Click Apps in the top navigation bar to get to our app store.
3. Locate the Video Stream app (you can search for it to move things along) and click Try App.
4. A window will pop up where you'll be prompted to either create a new playlist for the app or add the app to an existing playlist.
Choose how you'd like to proceed and & click Continue.
5. Now you're ready to configure the app.
6. Duration (seconds): This setting is determined automatically by the length of your video stream and typically doesn't need to be adjusted.
7. Video URL: Paste your HLS stream URL here (e.g. https://example.com/video.m3u8
).
MP4 links may also work, though support is not guaranteed.
8. Proxy URL (optional): To sync video playback across multiple screens, you'll need to set up a proxy server using the HLS-Proxy tool.
This proxy acts as an intermediary between your players and the original video stream, reducing latency and supporting time-aligned playback.
To use it:
Follow the GitHub instructions to install and run the proxy on a server or machine in your local network.
After setup, locate the IP address of that machine (e.g.
192.168.0.50
).Enter that IP address - including the port (usually
8080
) - in the Proxy URL field (e.g.http://192.168.0.50:8080
).
This step is only required if you plan to enable the sync feature across multiple screens.
⚠️ Note: Due to browser restrictions, this proxy approach may not work reliably on Chrome versions higher than 96. We recommend testing in your environment or contacting support if you need help.
9. Should Sync: Toggle this on to synchronize playback across multiple screens. When enabled, each screen connected to the same stream and using the same proxy server will play the video at the same time.
This creates a seamless viewing experience across your network - especially useful in venues with multiple displays like bars or event spaces.
This setting only works if you've entered a Proxy URL (see step 8 above for setup instructions).
10: Audio: Toggle on Mute if you want the stream to play without sound.
11. If you're happy with these settings and your stream is working, click Save Changes.
12. Your Video Stream app instance will now be listed as a slide in your playlist.
If you want to add more content to this playlist, click Add more content and use the content picker to select the content you want to add (media, apps, dashboards, Studio content, etc.)
To continue on to publishing instructions from here, you can skip to section 3: How to publish the app to your screen/s.
Using the Design Studio
1. Click Studio in the top navigation bar. Then click Create in Studio to start a new design.
2. This will open up a blank canvas for you to start adding content to! To add the Video Stream app, either scroll to find it in the Apps menu to the right or search for it to find it faster.
3. Click the app or drag and drop to add it onto your canvas.
4. Customizing the Video Stream app settings works the same way in the Design Studio - all settings will be found in the panel to the left. To bring up the panel, click on the app from the canvas.
You can continue to customize your content however you wish in the studio! Some ideas to customize this might be:
Add your company logo the slide
Add text boxes and scrolling ticker texts with important messages, reminders, or requests pertaining to your content or company initiatives
Add QR codes to your display to create calls to action for your colleagues or employees
Incorporate other apps & integrations into the display, such as the World Clock app or CNN app to grab attention with live updating headlines
Highlight key data points from your reports or dashboards for easy reference
In my example, I’ve used the Video Stream app to entertain children with a looping animated short, while pairing it with a branded QR check-in panel and a helpful bottom banner for parents.
When you’re satisfied with how your content looks, click Save and Close. This will close out the design studio. To publish this content, you’ll need to add it to a playlist, which we’ll cover in the next section.
How to publish the app to your screens
Note: If you want to add content you created in the studio to a playlist, you’ll need to navigate to the Playlists page by clicking Playlists in the top navigation bar and Create Playlist to start a new playlist.
That's where we'll pick up our instructions below.
1. Give your playlist a name (we suggest making it something relevant to distinguish it from other playlists later on down the road.)
2. Click Select Screens to choose where to publish your playlist. You can publish this playlist to one, or multiple screens.
3. If you used the playlist builder to configure the app, you'll already see it listed under the Content for your playlist.
If you used the Studio to configure the app, you'll need to click Select Content and select it from the Studio Content tab in content picker.
3. You can also add more content to your playlist by clicking Add More Content and choosing other apps, uploading media, or from the content that you created in the studio.
4. When you've selected all the content items you want to add to this playlist, you're ready to put it on screen or schedule it!
Click Preview it to see what it will look like on screen.
To publish it to screen right away, click Publish. This is will send it to your screen/s right away & play it indefinitely until you unpublish it.
To save it & come back to later, click Finish later.
To get specific about what dates, days, and times this playlist runs, you can use the Schedule. Learn more about scheduling capabilities in our playlists collection.
